the story of Deglet Nour

Often referred to as the ‘Queen of dates’ and ‘Date of light,’ for their characteristic soft touch, translucent blond color and unique nutty and caramel-like flavor, the Deglet Nour are medium sized, beautiful amber-colored dates.

The Deglet Nour date originally comes from Algeria, which is still the world's largest producer of Deglet Nour dates. It is grown predominantly in the Biskra province of Algeria, in the oases of Tolga and M'Chouneche.

Having a drier texture as compared to Medjoul dates these keep much longer and make a great all-purpose date. Their balanced sugar level, wealth of vitamins and loads of minerals make them an ideal snack or quick energy source.

They are a great source of fiber (100gms supply almost 32% of DRI) and are dense in nutrients like Potassium, Manganese, Vitamin B6, Iron, Magnesium, Calcium and Niacin. They also contain 17 out of the 20 essential amino acids that aid in protein synthesis assisting in hair, nail and muscle growth. Researchers have found that Deglet Noor dates to have more antioxidant scavenging power than other varieties -- and that a handful have about the same antioxidant capacity as half a glass of red wine.

They can be relished alone or mixed interestingly with raw walnut halves or nuts to make great snacks. Being only moderately sweet and a bit on the dry side make them easier to work with, especially for stuffing and cooking. They are excellent in energy bars, or partnered with goat cheese by chopping them over a salad.
