Wild fig trees first grew in Africa, West Asia, South Asia and around the Mediterranean Sea beginning probably about a hundred million years ago, in the time of the dinosaurs. People have been eating wild figs since there first were people.
In the Bible they have been mentioned multiple times as ‘sacred fruit’ and ‘gifts of the spirit’ with the tree referred to as the ’Tree of Life.’ The fig tree symbolizes life, prosperity, peace and righteousness throughout the holy book and apparently Adam and Eve used leaves of the fig tree to cover themselves up.
Unlike most dried figs where almost all of the moisture is extracted and the fruit is flattened out completely, our exquisite Figs from Turkey are dried from the outside, making the flesh soft and chewy, while allowing the inside to still be moist so one can also enjoy their sweet juice and crunchy seeds.
Figs are high in fiber and a good source of several essential minerals, including magnesium, manganese, calcium (which promotes bone density), copper, and potassium (which helps lower blood pressure), as well as vitamins, principally K and B6.
Dried figs can be eaten by themselves, or used sliced and stuffed with cream cheese and almonds, or sliced and sprinkled as Pizza toppings among many other ways.
